Join Alan Rownan, Industry Manager for Sports and Entertainment and Justas Gedvilas, Research Manager for Sports and Entertainment as they look back at 2020 and give some predictions for the industry in the new year. Initial predictions for the sports industry for 2020 were optimistic, but its clear now how much the coronavirus pandemic has decimated the industry. Out of the leagues Euromonitor International researches, there were 44.5 million fewer spectators in the 2019-2020 season than the 2018-2019 season, and US $1.66 billion lost ticket revenues. The situation in 2021 hasn’t improved as much; and its difficult to imagine full stadiums soon. In a best-case scenario, we could see stadiums at 100 percent capacity in the Spring of 2022, and that depends on vaccine rollouts, stadium cleanliness and temperature scanning and individual comfort with crowds. Digital engagement has been an essential part of fan engagement, and we expect to see this trend continue in 2021.
