PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Convenience stores’ expansion to suburban areas a key challenge
Small local grocers is set to see further value growth over the forecast period, though outlet numbers are expected to stagnate. Value sales are, not, however, expected to recover to pre-pandemic levels by 2029.
Daily food and drink commodities still the most sought after products, with sachet sizes set to make a big contribution
Daily food and drink commodities such as eggs, rice, vegetable oil, and rice will remain the primary products that consumers go to small local grocers to purchase. The availability of smaller volumes, which require a lower immediate outlay than standard packaging, will be a key attraction for the many low-income consumers who frequent such stores.
Stagnant outlet numbers, but stores located far from convenience stores will survive
The number of small local grocers outlets is expected to stagnate over the forecast period. The small local grocers outlets that are most likely to survive and even thrive are those located in areas that have not yet been encroached on by convenience stores.

Small Local Grocers
Small local grocers are mostly independent retail outlets (with a selling space of under 400 square metres), kiosks, market stalls or street vendors, owned by families and/or run on an individual basis, and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Small local grocers also includes ethnic grocery stores that specialize in foreign brands and food types, health food stores, confectioners/newsagents/tobacconists (CTNs), food & drink souvenir stores, legally registered mobile shops that are run out of a truck, and regional specialty stores. Retail sales from farmers markets, farms, vineyards, or similar producers are also included in small local grocers. Outlets located within wet markets in Southeast Asia (often located in government-owned multi-story buildings) should be counted as separate outlets.
