PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Specialised retailers are set to benefit from the premiumisation trend
Across the forecast period, retail sales are set to grow at a current value CAGR of 1% (2024 constant value CAGR of -2%). Despite the general price sensitivity of Slovak households, local small grocers that successfully offer added value in terms of quality or provide good value-for-money solutions, will remain in demand across the forecast period.
Mobile stores are set to become popular in rural areas
Traditional retailing concepts will see renewed attention from both consumers and entrepreneurs across the forecast period. There is set to be a growing interest in mobile stores, such as bakeries, that offer high-quality baked goods in areas where these are otherwise unavailable, particularly in rural regions.
Consumer sentiment will remain negative in 2025 as new taxes limit purchasing power
Tobacco excise taxes increased in 2024 and are set for another hike in 2025, as the Slovak government seeks to consolidate its spending and implement austerity measures to address the growing fiscal deficit. While excise tax increases directly drive retail sales (excluding VAT), tobacco sales are expected to remain strong in terms of value.

Small Local Grocers
Small local grocers are mostly independent retail outlets (with a selling space of under 400 square metres), kiosks, market stalls or street vendors, owned by families and/or run on an individual basis, and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Small local grocers also includes ethnic grocery stores that specialize in foreign brands and food types, health food stores, confectioners/newsagents/tobacconists (CTNs), food & drink souvenir stores, legally registered mobile shops that are run out of a truck, and regional specialty stores. Retail sales from farmers markets, farms, vineyards, or similar producers are also included in small local grocers. Outlets located within wet markets in Southeast Asia (often located in government-owned multi-story buildings) should be counted as separate outlets.
