Tobacco in 2024: The big picture
Overall, there was a fall in volume sales in tobacco in Slovenia in 2024, as smoking prevalence continued to fall and consumers increasingly safeguarded their health. This decline was seen in traditional tobacco products, including cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos, and pipe tobacco. The only exception was fine cut tobacco, which registered a moderate increase in volume sales. With cigarettes becoming increasingly more expensive, some smokers switched to fine cut tobacco, and rolling their own cigarettes, as fine cut tobacco is less expensive.
2024 key trends
Cigarettes continued to account for most volume sales, though registered volume decline, as consumers switched to heated tobacco in particular, in an effort to minimise the damaging effects of tobacco. As such, heated tobacco was the best performing product in 2024 and continued to see innovation and frequent product launches, as manufacturers focused on improving the user experience.
Competitive landscape
Due to its significant penetration in cigarettes, Tobacna Ljubljana, owned by Imperial Brands Plc, continued to lead the competitive landscape, accounting for nearly a third of volume sales. It offer popular brands, Boss and West, and others including Davidoff and Gauloises. Philip Morris doo offers the leading cigarette brand, Marlboro.
Retail developments
Supermarkets continued to be the leading distribution channels for tobacco, particularly for cigarettes, heated tobacco and fine cut tobacco. There is an extensive network of supermarkets in Slovenia and such outlets have a wide range and smokers find it convenient to buy tobacco, while also doing grocery shopping.
What next for tobacco?
There will be a further decline in volume sales of tobacco over the forecast period, as smoking prevalence continues to fall and sees lower sales for cigarettes, cigars and cigarillos, and pipe tobacco. However, as in 2024, there will be a modest increase in volume sales for fine cut tobacco, as some cigarettes smokers opt to roll cigarettes instead, as it is more affordable.
