The rate of growth in retail volume (sticks) sales of tobacco in Tanzania accelerated sharply in 2024. Having declined earlier in the review period, retail volume (sticks) sales of cigarettes exhibited strong growth in 2024. Locally manufactured brands are growing in popularity due to their affordability, as their prices have remained relatively stable. There has been a notable rise in the availability of global cigarette brands, particularly within the premium and mid-range categories, mainly driven by affluent local consumers. Retail volume sales of cigars and cigarillos, as well as e-vapour products continued to expand at a robust pace in 2024, albeit from quite a low base.
Having declined earlier in the review period, retail volume (sticks) sales of cigarettes exhibited strong growth in 2024 but remained below their level at the beginning of the review period. Locally manufactured brands are growing in popularity due to their affordability, as their prices have remained relatively stable. Smoking is increasingly seen as fashionable among young Tanzanians, although public opinion is generally turning against cigarette smoking.
Tanzania Cigarette Co Ltd’s Winston is the dominant cigarette brand, largely due to its affordability. It retails at TZS3,000 to TZS4,000 per packet and TZS150 to TZS250 per stick. Winston offers five variants with different flavours and varying price points. TCC's widespread distribution network ensures its brands are readily available in outlets nationwide, both urban and rural. While premium and imported cigarette brands had their niche following, the preference among Tanzanian smokers leaned heavily towards locally produced mid to low-tier brands due to their affordability.
Rising importation and transportation costs and increased import duties have led to a significant decline in the availability of popular premium cigarette brands like British American Tobacco Plc’s Dunhill Switch in retail outlets. Premium brands are primarily sold in upmarket areas, as well as in high-end bars, clubs and large grocery retail outlets like Shoppers Supermarket. Obtaining Dunhill Switch locally has become increasingly difficult, forcing some retailers to source the product from Dubai. This has contributed to further price hikes.
Retail volume sales (sticks) of tobacco will continue to expand at a rapid clip during the forecast period, underpinned by robust economic growth, a rising population and urbanisation, as well as a lack of regulation. This growth will be mainly driven by locally manufactured cigarette brands due to their affordability. In Tanzania, regulations favour domestic cigarette manufacturers, and the consumption of cigarettes is not rigorously controlled.
