Tobacco in 2024: The big picture
It was a mixed picture for tobacco in Peru in 2024. Peru’s most popular tobacco product, cigarettes, saw volume sales fall slightly, while current value sales for e-vapour products soared by a fifth.
2024 key trends
Cigarettes continued to be the most popular in tobacco product in Peru, with leading brands being Pall Mall and Lucky Strike (British American Tobacco), and Marlboro (Philip Morris International). In 2024, economy brands gained ground, with mid-priced and premium brands losing ground, as tobacco companies tried to compete with the illicit trade in terms of price.
Competitive landscape
British American Tobacco del Perú SAC continued to dominate tobacco in Peru, accounting for three-quarters of volume sales and had an even greater volume share in cigarettes. Its main competitor in cigarettes was the illicit trade.
Retail developments
Small local grocers continued to be the leading distribution channel, especially for cigarettes, due to their proximity and in terms of cigarettes, their perceived lower prices. In the case of cigars and cigarillos, as well as smoking tobacco, specialised tobacco stores are by far the main sales channel. For e-vapour products, since the launch of closed system single use e-vapour products, convenience retailers are the key distributers for brands such as Vuse, with less well known brands being sold through small local grocers.
What next for tobacco?
As it 2024, the performance will be mixed. Cigarettes will see a further fall in volume sales, as smoking rates continue to fall, and the illicit trade continues to be a major obstacle. On the other hand, e-vapour products will continue to register healthy constant value and volume growth, and will be further supported by an improving economy.
