Alcoholic drinks in 2024: The big picture
Sales of alcoholic drinks in Uganda continued to experience strong growth in total volume terms in 2024, backed by a more stable rate of inflation. Growth was also boosted by an increase in disposable income, although rising prices, particularly in spirits, still dampened growth rates in 2024.
2024 trends
Beer continued to be the largest category within alcoholic drinks in Uganda in 2024. Although standard lager remains the most popular option, craft beer has gained a growing following among younger consumers who are looking for unique and artisanal products. This trend can be seen in the growing number of microbreweries and brewpubs that have emerged in the country. These establishments offer a wide variety of craft beer options, often made with locally sourced ingredients, which appeals to consumers who are seeking a more authentic and flavourful experience.
Competitive landscape
The Ugandan alcoholic drinks market has long been dominated by two players, Nile Breweries Ltd and Uganda Breweries Ltd, but they are now starting to see increased competition from smaller competitors. These smaller players are manufacturing spirits and wine which are aimed at younger customers (of a legal drinking age), resulting in increased rivalry.
Retail developments
Food/drink/tobacco specialists remains the leading retail distribution channel for alcoholic drinks in Uganda, with small local grocers and supermarkets being other key channels.
On-trade vs off-trade split
Off-trade sales of alcoholic drinks saw stronger growth than on-trade sales in 2024 in volume terms. This was partly because many people chose to drink at home as it is much cheaper. Furthermore, consumers can also drink a lot more at home without fear of stigma or the risk of having to drive home.
What next for alcoholic drinks?
Sales of alcoholic drinks in Uganda are projected to continue seeing strong and steady growth in total volume terms over the forecast period. Many categories, including beer, wine, and RTDs, should continue to see impressive momentum, driven by consumer curiosity, shifting health priorities, and international expansion.
