Alcoholic drinks in 2024: The big picture
Although the impact of price hikes resulted in positive growth for alcoholic drinks in Japan in total value terms in 2024, total volume sales continued to see a slight decline, due to the declining population, and Japan being one of the fastest ageing populations globally.
2024 key trends
Beer was the largest category within overall alcoholic drinks in Japan in 2024, but total volume sales saw a decline. The major reason for falling sales was the strong decline of economy lager, which had been the largest category before 2023.
Competitive landscape
Suntory Spirits Ltd was the leading company within alcoholic drinks overall in total volume terms in Japan in 2024, and continued to see a rising share of sales. The company produces a wide range of brands, with amongst its most significant including Kinmugi (beer) -196C Strong Zero (RTDs), and Kakubin (spirits), as well as having smaller brands in wine.
Retail developments
Supermarkets was the leading distribution channel within alcoholic drinks overall in 2024, with its off-trade volume and value shares rising slightly. While the share of this sales channel slightly declined in 2022 after the pandemic peak, supermarkets maintained its share in 2023, and slightly increased in 2024.
On-trade vs off-trade split
In 2023, the Japanese government downgraded the legal status of COVID-19 to Class 5, similar to influenza, which allowed individuals and businesses to make their own decisions on COVID-19 prevention measures. This led more consumers to eat out in foodservice outlets again.
What next for alcoholic drinks?
Total volume sales of alcoholic drinks are set to continue to see a slow and stable decline throughout the forecast period. However, although most of the main categories are expected to see sales decline, RTDs is anticipated to maintain its growth trend, in large part due to sugar-free products.
