Alcoholic drinks in 2024: The big picture
It was a mixed picture for alcoholic drinks in the Dominican Republic in 2024. While wine and beer performed well, volume sales for spirits, RTDs and cider/perry all fell. In terms of beer, its affordability supported volume sales, as consumers continued to be price sensitive, after several years of price hikes. In addition, consumers find beer refreshing during the hot summer months. This price sensitivity was one reason for the decline in spirits, as it more expensive than other alcoholic drinks.
2024 key trends
Beer continued to be the most popular alcoholic drink, accounting for about nine-tenths of volume sales. Consumers appreciate its affordability and refreshing properties. Brands also invest significantly in marketing and promotion to ensure it remains top of mind for consumers.
Competitive landscape
Cervecería Nacional Dominicana SA, owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, continued to dominate, and gained further volume share in 2024. The company produces beer brands Presidente, Brahma Light, The One and Bohemia Especial brands in mid-priced lager, and also imports Corona, Modelo Especial, Budweiser and Stella Artois, which are positioned as premium. It cements its position by investing heavily in marketing.
Retail developments
Small local grocers (colmados) continued to be the main retail channel, accounting for over half of volume sales. In addition, many small local grocers in the Dominican Republic are a hybrid channel. Though mainly off-trade, many outlets, called colmadones, have tables and chairs where consumers can consume their beer on site. They are particularly popular with lower-income consumers.
On-trade vs off-trade split
Off-trade continued to account for most volume sales; however, on-trade registered higher volume growth in 2024. Increased numbers of foreign tourists boosted volume sales. With consumers also being price sensitive in on-trade channels, colmadones have also registered growth. Colmadones are a unique type of establishment, where consumers can purchase alcoholic drinks for on-site consumption.
What next for alcoholic drinks?
The outlook is positive over the forecast period, with moderate volume growth projected. Increasing tourist numbers will also support volume growth. In addition, the premiumisation trend will continue, especially for drinks such as dark rum, tequila, vodka, gin and whisky, as well as wine.
