Alcoholic drinks in 2024: The big picture
Following a significant decline in sales in total volume terms in 2023, alcoholic drinks saw a more stable performance in 2024, albeit sales still declined slightly. This improved performance was linked to the fact that prices stabilised through both the on- and off-trade in 2024, following the strong price increases seen in 2023, which provided a boost to volume sales.
2024 key trends
Bitters remained the biggest category in 2024 with demand fuelled by popular brands such as Campari, Aperol and Vecchio Amaro del Capo. Within bitters, however, only certain products (such as Aperol and Campari) have been able to tap into the mixology trend, whereas amaro type bitters are usually drank pure with brands such as Amaro Montenegro, Vecchio Amaro del Capo, and Averna Amaro seeing declining sales in 2024 as a result.
Competitive landscape
Heineken Italia SpA remained the leading player in alcoholic drinks in Italy in 2024, slightly ahead of Birra Peroni Srl. Heineken offers a wide range of beer products across several beer categories, while it also enjoys a wide distribution network through off- and on-trade channels across the Italian territory.
Retail developments
Supermarkets remained the leading retail distribution channel for alcoholic drinks in Italy in 2024, ahead of hypermarkets. Supermarkets benefit from a good mix of prices (which are lower than in hypermarkets) and quality when it comes to wine, spirits and beer.
On-trade vs off-trade split
Both on-trade and off-trade volume sales of alcoholic drinks remained static in 2024. However, the on-trade channel did see a slightly slower decline than the off-trade channel.
What next for alcoholic drinks?
Sales of alcoholic drinks are projected to return to growth in off- and on-trade volume terms over the forecast period after seeing declining sales in 2023 and 2024. This improved performance is likely to be fuelled by more stable prices and an improvement in the economy, which in turn should also fuel a premiumisation trend which is likely to benefit spirits, especially in categories such as whiskies.
