PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Challenges will force convenience retailers to adapt store format for greater differentiation
Growth in convenience retailers may be undermined by unfavourable macroeconomic conditions in Germany over the first half of the forecast period. With low consumer confidence expected, convenience retailers could suffer from its perception as a high-price channel compared to competing grocery formats, while the high network density of other grocery channels, notably discounters, limits the potential for network expansion.
Operational shifts likely to give greater prominence to major grocery retailers
Following the model used by REWE to go, operators of forecourt retailers are expected to develop closer partnerships with large grocery retailers, instead of being managed directly by the service station operator. This would enable them to offer more competitive prices for food and drinks, notably through their wide private label assortment and logistics capabilities.
Switch to electric cars will force forecourt retailers to rethink current business model
The continued shift away from combustion engine cars in Germany is expected to create challenges for forecourt retailers as they seek to focus on services linked to charging stations for electric vehicles. Under the transition from combustion engines to zero emissions vehicles, the sale of new cars with combustion engines will be phased out by 2035, although the EU Commission has allowed cars running on e-fuels, which are synthetic alternative to gasoline, to remain available after 2035.
