PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Inflation, while largely tamed, continues to rear its head
Inflation has been perhaps the largest story in the US economy since the closing months of 2022. US consumers in recent generations are not particularly comfortable navigating inflation, and inflation had largely remained low since around the 1980s in the US.
Commercial debit cards remains underpenetrated
While personal payments in the US have dramatically moved to cards in recent decades, commercial payments remain considerably different. Cheques remain a significant factor in the US, while electronic transfers continue to grow.
Lawsuits and Supreme Court decision
Financial cards in the US are frequently the target of legal action, with a number of high-profile lawsuits constantly working their way through the court systems. 2024 was no exception, and in particular saw an interesting Supreme Court decision and the launch of an antitrust lawsuit that are likely to complicate the landscape for years to come.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
