PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Regulation on the use of credit cards in sports betting expected to favour the use of debit cards
The increase in household spending on online betting games came under the radar of the Central Bank of Brazil (BCB) in 2024. The concern is that part of the household budget is being spent on sports betting on online platforms in an uncontrolled way, which could reduce the disposable income available for consumption and debt repayment.
More debit cards being used for public transportation
Since 2017, operators have been investing in contactless payment operations for transportation services. In cities such as Rio de Janeiro, which hosts many visitors from other Brazilian regions and countries, the use of this technology has stood out, especially during major events such as Carnival, and Madonna’s show, which took place in the first half of 2024.
Commercial debit cards in decline
Commercial debit cards have been experiencing a decline in usage in Brazil, due to a lack of additional benefits compared with credit cards, and limitations in expense control, alongside the rise of more modern and flexible solutions. In addition, with debit cards, payments are immediate, and funds are withdrawn directly from the company’s account, which can negatively impact cash flow.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
