PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Shift towards cashless society will drive decline in debit card usage
Demand for debit cards in Thailand is expected to continue its decline over the forecast period as the country transitions toward a cashless society. This change will be largely driven by evolving consumer preferences, which favour the convenience of electronic payments, the operational efficiencies of e-payment solution providers, and the government's National e-Payment initiative.
Introduction of cross-bank cardless withdrawals may further reduce reliance on physical debit cards
In Thailand, cardless withdrawals have significantly enhanced the convenience of accessing funds via mobile apps at ATMs without the need for a physical debit card. Historically, this service has been restricted to ATMs operated by the same bank as the mobile app, limiting its accessibility compared to debit cards, which can be used at ATMs of different banks.
Cardless withdrawal fee proposal faces delay amid consumer backlash
In a bid to reduce cash usage and debit card dependency, financial institutions in Thailand have introduced cardless withdrawal services, allowing customers to withdraw cash from ATMs using their bank’s mobile application, eliminating the need for a physical debit card and associated fees. This move is part of a broader push to accelerate the shift toward a cashless society, offering greater convenience and promoting digital payment adoption.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
