PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Debit cards set to remain the biggest beneficiary of a continuing shift away from cash
Compared to most other European countries, the role of cash payments was still relatively large in Austria by the end of the review period, which means that card payments continue to hold growth potential — from which debit cards will, again, benefit the most. Indeed, increasingly, debit cards are the first choice for payments of practically any size in everyday life, whether by physical card or, increasingly often, via in a digital wallet.
Mastercard set to remain the leader
Mastercard is set to remain the leader in debit cards over the forecast period, given its established relationships with the major issuing consumer banks. As long as Visa does not have such relationships, or Mastercard and Visa debit cards are not offered in parallel, the brand has no real chance of achieving a truly relevant role in debit cards.
Growth opportunities outweigh threats in the near future
It is also worth mentioning some more recent innovations whose impact is more difficult to estimate, and which have therefore hardly been included in the forecast.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
