PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Cards in circulation to see growth continue to slow
The number of debit cards in circulation is set to see further positive growth that will nonetheless continue to slow down during the forecast period. Growth will be supported by consumers opening new bank accounts to access credit and loans, and thus automatically receiving debit cards.
Transaction volume and value likely to keep on falling
In terms of volume and value transactions, it is expected that the debit cards category will see a negative growth trend in the forecast period, largely thanks to increasing digital transactions with QRIS connected to bank accounts or digital wallets. Payments through QRIS are not only convenient, but when linked to digital wallets are also often accompanied by cashback promotions or discounts – usually offered at retail channel outlets such as C-Stores.
Digitalisation trend to shape category’s future progress
During the forecast period, debit cards players will continue to invest in innovative payment features that provide easy transactional flexibility for their customers, as seen with the launch of contactless debit cards in 2024. Leading players will create more promotions for payment through virtual debit cards.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
