Debit cards is set to experience sustained growth in transaction volumes and values in current terms in Singapore in the forecast period, particularly for everyday purchases. The increasing adoption of contactless payments and mobile wallets, driven by convenience and government initiatives to promote a cashless society, will significantly boost debit card usage.
Debit cards are becoming increasingly competitive with credit cards
With the recent increase in transaction limits for e-wallets and debit cards in Singapore, debit cards are becoming increasingly competitive with credit cards, especially for consumers who prefer to avoid debt but still want the flexibility to make larger transactions. As the transaction caps increase on e-wallets, users can now make larger purchases without relying on credit, appealing to individuals seeking more financial discipline.

With the intensified competition in the payments landscape in Singapore over the forecast period, it will be crucial for debit card providers to consistently attract and retain customers, and encourage higher usage. To thrive in a highly competitive environment, debit card issuers will have to distinguish themselves by offering customers innovative features, seamless user experiences, and additional value.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
