PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Debit cards well placed to benefit from rollout of Bre-B payment system
Debit cards looks set to register healthy growth in card circulation numbers and volume and current value transactions throughout the forecast period. Given that these instruments have long been the most widely used types of financial cards in Colombia due to their easy accessibility, versatility, relatively low fees and benefits in terms of budget management, the category will continue to profit more than others from the increasing tendency of consumers and businesses to reduce their use of cash and choose alternative payment methods.
Contactless and digital payments via debit cards set to continue rising
Debit cards is expected to see contactless transactions increase strongly in volume and current value terms throughout the forecast period as more merchants acquire dataphones and other NFC-enabled POS devices or software systems that allow them to utilise smartphones and tablets to receive these kinds of payments, including via QR codes. In particular, growth will be driven by the wider adoption of such solutions among small and medium-sized retail and foodservice enterprises.
Use of advanced security measures for debit card payments expected to increase
As the use of debit cards in Colombia increases, so too does the risk of fraud and identity theft. Accordingly, strategies to mitigate against these threats will remain a focal point for investment and innovation among issuers and network operators over the forecast period.

Debit Card Transactions
Debit cards merge the functionality of both an ATM card and direct payment from a bank account (a check substitute in some markets). A debit card allows the cardholder to receive cash and monitor account activity at an ATM machine, as well as pay for goods and services via a point-of-sale terminal. A debit card payment transaction involves the automatic withdrawal of funds from the cardholder’s demand deposit bank account (checking or giro). Since the funds are removed from a bank account, no interest is charged on payments. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
