Sales of imaging devices will fall further over the forecast period, as digital cameras returns to decline and digital camcorders shows no sign of recovery. The category’s positive growth recorded in 2024 was boosted by several factors including the release of flagship models by major brands, increased inbound demand due to a weaker yen and a recovery in production systems that had previously stagnated.
Fujifilm has made some intriguing moves. In May 2025, it announced a new product called X half - a fixed lens camera that offers an experience akin to using a film camera.
Traditional digital camcorders in Japan, once led by the vertically oriented Handycam type, has significantly contracted. Canon ceased production of these traditional camcorders in 2019, followed by JVC Kenwood in 2021.
