Despite improved conditions, the recent sharp rise in interest rates and consumer restraint were still clearly felt in 2024, and consumers in Austria remained very cautious about taking out new consumer credit. However, already from 2025 onwards, and despite the many uncertainties surrounding various global crises, the favourable climate should manifest increasingly stronger growth, with consumer demand for lending expected to pick up again.
Auto lending is expected to maintain a moderate performance and to stay behind other categories, with stagnation in gross lending. Along with possibly prevailing financial constraints consumers are facing, this is also the result of long-term urbanisation developments, where owning a car is less relevant.
The usage of credit cards has increasingly been impacted by the new generation of debit cards and, first of all, Mastercard Debit in the review period. By the end of the review period, most consumers had already understood that, in contrast to the previously dominant Maestro debit cards, such cards were accepted online and abroad to the same extent as the charge and credit cards of the respective brand.
