PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Number and value of personal credit transactions set to steadily grow as more consumers apply for a credit card
The forecast period is set to see increasing spend on credit cards, in both the number and value of transactions. Local consumers are applying for credit cards for personal usage, causing a marginal shift in the payments landscape.
Tighter regulation for BNPL services makes credit cards a viable option for consumers
In 2024, the Australian government introduced a new regulation to include BNPL services under the Consumer Credit Act as a low-cost credit option. This means that BNPL will be under the scrutiny of some checks that a credit card or other loan product is subject to, such as affordability checks and compliance to consumer credit law.
Commercial credit cards set to grow as number of new businesses rises
Commercial credit cards are estimated to experience healthy growth over the forecast period, due to a combination of changing working landscape and steady rise in new businesses entering the market. With remote working arrangements gradually being phased out or limited in Australia, employees are spending greater time in their offices, which will require investments from companies to accommodate a rise in spending through corporate credit cards.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
