PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
The French save more than they borrow, dampening growth for credit cards
The current economic environment in France, marked by high unemployment and cautious consumer spending, creates a challenging outlook for credit card operators. French consumers, traditionally averse to debt, tend to favour debit cards over credit cards, as the former help them to manage money within their means.
BNPL faces uncertain future, with growing competitive threat from charge cards
Opinions differ about the potential of BNPL in France. On the hand, according to international experts, the medium- to long-term growth potential of the BNPL sector in the country remains strong.
Online banks and neobank credit cards have room for growth but appear increasingly fragile
The credit card market in France presents opportunities for neobanks like N26, Revolut, Nickel, and Anytime, which are expected to expand their financial card offerings - including credit and charge cards alongside their debit cards. Key advantages for these digital banks include low operation costs: neobanks have fewer fixed expenses compared to traditional banks, helping them stay competitive despite limited profitability.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
