PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Use of personal credit cards will continue rising despite falling circulation numbers
The downward trajectory in circulation numbers observed in personal credit cards in Italy over recent years looks set to persist throughout the forecast period. This is because more people are now consciously choosing to rationalise the number of cards they hold in order to achieve greater control over spending and avoid getting into too much debt.
Digitalisation trend set to gain momentum
Digitalisation is likely to become more pronounced in credit cards over the forecast period. Rising merchant acceptance of digital payments made via these instruments and their growing integration into digital wallets by Italian consumers will remain the most visible manifestations of this trend.
Commercial category will remain a focal point for investment among issuers
Commercial credit cards is projected to post stronger growth in volume transactions than personal credit cards throughout the forecast period, albeit from a much lower base. It is also predicted to see card circulation numbers increase steadily while the personal category continues to contract in this regard.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
