PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Egyptian banks hold the top of the Forbes Middle East list
Forbes Middle East announced its top 50 listed companies ranking for 2024, and the Commercial International Bank (CIB) proudly took the first place, followed by Qatar National Bank Al Ahli (QNB ALAHLI Life Co) in second place. Notably, QNB is at the forefront of “green” and sustainable banking initiatives, having launched a “green” programme which is only available for individuals seeking green housing, solar systems, and energy efficient household appliances and tools, as well as electric cars and vehicles, with special rates and programme criteria that is much more flexible and affordable than regular individual bank loans.
Credit cards popular for e-commerce purchases
It is noted that credit cards are popular for e-commerce purchases, thus, the ongoing development of e-commerce and mobile commerce (m-commerce) also supports credit card usage. This is in line with the improving financial inclusion rate in the country, which also continues to flourish.
Sustainable banking and eco-friendly cards set to be key trends
In a cross-category trend, “green” finance and sustainable banking is another trend set to develop further in financial cards over the forecast period. The Central Bank of Egypt initially started this journey in 2019 and, by the start of 2023, the new list of binding regulations was released to include sustainable finance policies into banks’ credit and investment policies, through the relevant departments, along with committing banks to annual sustainability reports and to consulting environmental experts to further enhance their scoring.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
