PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Healthy growth in circulation numbers and transactions projected
Credit cards looks set to perform well throughout the forecast period, with circulation numbers and volume and current value transactions projected to grow steadily. It is anticipated access to these instruments will continue to increase in tandem with further advances in financial inclusion among the Colombian population.
Added-value benefits set to become a more important selling point
Interest rates, fees and terms will continue to be the main points of competition in credit cards during the forecast period. However, as usage levels rise and maturity tempers growth prospects, issuers and network operators will increasingly seek to gain an edge on rivals and win over more customers by enhancing their offers in other areas.
Open Finance initiative should expand access to credit cards
State agency La Superintendencia Financiera de Colombia recently launched the second phase of its Open Finance initiative. Scheduled to be fully implemented by late 2025, this phase is primarily concerned with improving the use of financial data so as to increase the accessibility of various products and services and promote healthier competition between banks, fintechs and other industry players.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
