PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Outbound travel booking and spending likely to be a key battlefield in the short term
The strong growth trajectory of credit card transactions in Taiwan in 2024 is being significantly fuelled by specific spending categories, with outbound travel expenditure and travel bookings, tax payments, and grocery spending emerging as key drivers. These three major categories collectively constitute a substantial 45% share of transaction values, underscoring their importance in driving credit card usage.
Intensifying competition expected, as loyalty and personalisation will be key
The competitive landscape in credit cards is expected to continue to intensify, driven largely by the rising prominence of digital wallets, which are increasingly ramping up their capabilities to offer appealing perks and rebates. As digital wallets gain traction amongst consumers for their convenience, security, and innovative features, traditional credit card issuers are facing mounting pressure to adapt and enhance their offerings to remain competitive.
BNPL is likely to be an area to watch
In Taiwan, Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) remains a relatively minor payment method compared with more established forms of payment. While BNPL has gained traction in some markets globally, its adoption in Taiwan has been slower, with traditional payment methods such as credit cards, and digital wallets together holding a dominant position in the payments ecosystem.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
