PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Co-branded credit cards between issuing banks and retailers expected to decline
There is a trend toward a decrease in co-branded credit cards between issuing banks and retailers from various segments in Brazil. This movement is based on the disadvantage identified by issuing banks of having to share the operation’s profits with these retail partners.
Artificial intelligence and machine learning set to revolutionise fraud prevention
One of the most common crimes involving credit cards in Brazil, aside from data breaches, is the “card POS terminal scam”. This occurs when victims hand their bank card to a fake merchant for a purchase and enter their PIN into the device.
Use of digital wallets likely to increase amongst older populations
Proximity payments are already experiencing significant growth in the country, especially amongst younger generations, who are more familiar with technology and digital practices. However, this behaviour is not yet as widespread amongst older generations, who tend to adopt new technologies more gradually as they feel more secure.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
