PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Diversified offering could give credit cards room for expansion
Although the credit cards landscape remained significantly underpenetrated in Morocco during the review period, improvements in financial literacy and diversified offerings are expected to allow for further expansion during the forecast period. To achieve this, more leading banks are likely to form strategic partnerships with fintech solutions to expand their services, while introducing new schemes such as renewable credit lines as an entry point to credit cards.
Credit cards could benefit from secondary market in non-performing loans
The Central Bank of Morocco has announced plans to launch a secondary market for non-performing loans (NPLs), marking a significant reform for the banking sector and the national economy. This initiative aims to remove legal obstacles hindering the direct transferability of these loans, including eliminating the requirement for debtor consent, and simplifying notification procedures.
Expansion of scope of fintechs could affect demand for commercial credit cards
In recent years, Bank Al-Maghrib has been developing new strategies to improve SMEs’ access to financing. In this regard, the agency aims to centralise SME financial data to reduce information asymmetry, strengthen public credit guarantees to encourage lending, and provide structured support through public-private partnerships.

Credit Card Transactions
Credit cards allow for purchases against a preapproved line of credit. The account holder has the choice of whether to pay off the entire balance each month or opt for monthly instalments with the balance serving as revolving credit. If the cardholder decides to revolve a balance, the consumer pays interest. Credit cards can include affinity cards, reward cards and types of co-branded cards. Co-branded retailer cards—issued by retailers acting as financial institutions and without usage restrictions—are included in this category. Cards issued by a retailer with usage limited to a specific store within a predefined retail group fall under the store cards definition. Debit cards with an overdraft function are not counted as cards with a credit function. Payments are tracked based on the country of residence / account issuance and include outbound spend while excluding inbound spend.
