Financial cards and payments in 2024: The big picture
The broader trend in financial cards and payments in Japan shows a decline in cash usage and a rise in usage of financial cards, with no signs of reversal. In terms of financial cards, both debit cards, which minimise worries of overspending, and credit cards, which are becoming increasingly convenient due to the expansion of contactless payment options, are extending their use.
2024 key trends
In Japan, there has been a noticeable increase in the “ripple mark” on credit and debit cards, indicating their compatibility with contactless payments. There are an increasing number of stores with devices compatible with the international “ripple mark”, leading to a rise in the number of users and frequency of use.
The changing face of Gaisho cards
Meanwhile, in department stores, the “Gaisho” (door-to-door sales) culture still prevails, and the presence of Gaisho cards, a type of store card, remains robust. Although the overall population is decreasing, the wealthy population is increasing in Japan.
Competitive landscape
There has been an increase in the use of Visa’s ripple mark-enabled contactless payment cards, and more stores are also installing ripple mark-compatible devices. Visa has identified Osaka as a focus area, and is advancing projects in line with the Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai.
