Financial cards and payments in 2024: The big picture
Financial cards and payments in the Czech Republic posted healthy growth in total card circulation numbers and volume and current value transactions in 2024. These results reflected the well-established tendency of consumers and businesses in the country to reduce their use of cash in favour of card-based and digital payment solutions.
Contactless payments continue to rise steadily
Contactless payments continued to increase steadily in volume and current value terms in the Czech Republic in 2024. Along with rising appreciation for their convenience among consumers and merchants, the expansion of POS infrastructure remained a key growth driver.
Czech National Bank launches Platba na Kontakt money transfer facility
In late 2023, the Czech National Bank added a new feature to the CERTIS interbank payment system that allows individuals and businesses to transfer money using only the other party's phone number. Known as Platba na Kontakt (Contact Payments), this facility requires clients to have a mobile banking app and join a registry that pairs phone numbers with the names and numbers of specific bank accounts.
Competitive landscape
Retail banks Ceska Sporitelna and Ceskoslovenska Obchodni Banka (CSOB) remained the top two financial card issuers in the Czech Republic in 2024 in terms of circulation numbers. Ceska Sporitelna also held the overall lead with regard to current value card payment transactions, followed by Komercni Banka and CSOB.
