PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Postbank will reshape competitiveness by taking over SASSA cards
As South Africa sought strategic ways to revive failed state-owned companies over the review period, the president approved the South African Postbank Limited Amendment Bill, which allowed the separation of South African Post Office activities by transferring the Postbank shareholding to the government. The decision led to the creation of a new state-owned entity under Postbank SoC Limited, where its mandate will be extended from strictly operating as the Post Office’s savings subsidiary to allowing general banking services such as transactional and credit accounts.
Digitalised remittance cards set to benefit from diversified offerings
The demand for remittance services at the end of the review period continued growing as the income divide deepened across Africa in general, and South Africa in particular. Therefore, an increasing number of fintech companies have started focusing on innovative solutions that leverage convenience and affordability to close the gap in supply.
Expansion in infrastructure will continue to boost transportation cards
Future growth of transportation cards will be supported by public transport efforts to move away from cash due to the increasing demand for convenience and safety. Johannesburg’s Metrobus, for instance, announced that it was no longer accepting cash transactions as of October 2024.
