PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
No growth drivers in sight for open loop pre-paid cards
Open loop pre-paid cards will become increasingly outdated over the forecast period. For their traditional main purposes, practical payments abroad and secure online payments, consumers will have more alternatives than ever, as well as the new-generation debit cards which practically every consumer in Austria has as standard anyway.
Various challenges and bad press hang over pre-paid cards — even the popular ones
A special standing in closed loop pre-paid cards can be noted with Westfield Gutscheinkarte, which is issued by shopping centre operator Westfield. Acceptance is limited to all roughly 600 shops of Shopping City Süd and Donauzentrum, the two largest shopping centres of the country, and it has a Maestro branding, which at the beginning of the review period still had a virtual monopoly in debit cards in Austria, but is currently being phased out worldwide by Mastercard.
Still some growth potential left for gift cards
On the other hand, transaction growth of closed loop pre-paid cars, or merchant issued gift cards, is expected to remain on a more stable positive level. Usage of gift cards is already high in Austria, but there is still some potential of retailers, service providers, and even shopping centres, to switch from paper vouchers to gift cards.
