PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Retail e-commerce offers strong growth opportunities, driven by convenience, a wide product assortment, and better financing options
While retail e-commerce saw a significant increase in its value sales in the last couple of years, its contribution to overall retailing in India remained below 10% in value terms in 2024. This is low compared with more advanced markets, and highlights its huge growth potential in the years ahead, with a double-digit CAGR anticipated.
Competitive landscape set to intensify, with the entry of new brands, and government-backed ONDC platform
Prior to the pandemic in 2019, retail e-commerce in India was primarily dominated by selected marketplace companies, which held approaching two-thirds of overall retail value sales. However, with new growth opportunities opening up, a plethora of new brands and retailers have been entering the online space.
Promotional shopping festivals will remain a focus area to drive continued growth
Many Indian consumers have a new financial mindset in the wake of high inflation, and are seeking the best deals when shopping, in a bid to maximise their budget. As such, people in the country are becoming more seasoned in making purchases through both offline and online channels, and understand when to use one or the other.
