PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
E-commerce will continue to expand thanks to digital innovation
E-commerce is expected to keep expanding within Mexico, mainly focusing on innovation involving augmented reality (AR) and AI. The former is already present in companies like Ray Ban and allows users to try on glasses virtually, while IKEA offers tools to visualise how furniture would look in any space.
Tariffs imposed by US government may boost local e-commerce growth
President Donald Trump has eliminated the tariff exemption for small packages from Mexico and Canada, which means that low-value shipments that previously entered the US duty-free will now incur import duties, directly affecting the prices of products sold through e-commerce platforms and marketplaces. Although Mexican consumers will most likely see an increase in prices as a result, it also opens the door for local retailers to take advantage of these tariffs and boost their digital sales during the forecast period.
Local retailers invest more to gain traction in e-commerce sales
The two biggest local companies for e-commerce in Mexico - Liverpool and Coppel - have made substantial investments in their digital capabilities to compete better against Amazon and Mercado Libre. Liverpool has its new logistical platform Arco Norte, which will be fully operational in 2025 and will help the company to fulfil its online supply chain at a faster rate, catering to evolving consumer needs.
