PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
A lack of store expansion is expected to challenge growth prospects
As grocery retailing in Austria has proven to be highly crisis-resistant, sales growth is expected to exceed inflation over the forecast period, with hypermarkets likely remaining within this range. However, hypermarkets will remain challenged by discounters.
Interspar will offer a wide range of foodservice options to gain consumer attention
Half of Billa Plus hypermarkets feature the Billa Marktküche self-service cafeteria, which is popular for offering quick and affordable dishes ideal for a lunch or shopping break. However, in 2024, the restaurants in two hypermarkets were closed, one of which explicitly stated that the closure was due to the need for an expanded bottle deposit return station in response to new legislative changes set to take effect in 2025.
Rewe is set to continue collaborating with local merchants to optimise profitability
Since 2022, Rewe International AG has been advancing a new concept aimed at transferring more control of its Billa supermarkets and Billa Plus hypermarkets to independent, local merchants. Due to the increased resources required, this shift has progressed more slowly for hypermarkets, with one Billa Plus store transferred to local merchant management in November 2023, and another in October 2024.
