PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Hypermarkets likely to continue to struggle to compete
Hypermarkets is set to maintain slow and stable current value growth in Brazil in the forecast period, but this will be unimpressive, and below the average for grocery retailers. As families are struggling to maintain their purchasing power from one year to the next, they will tend to buy everyday products in convenience retailers and, occasionally, in local supermarkets, and only when necessary will they make a trip to a hypermarket.
Carrefour expected to continue to lead hypermarkets
Even with the reduction in the number of outlets in 2024, Carrefour continued to dominate hypermarkets, followed by regional chains spread throughout the country. Its dominance in this channel is expected to prevail, since there is no other format that includes food, beverages, household cleaning products, beauty and personal care products, bazaar items, home appliances, electronics, and IT products in the same space.
The continued clash between hypermarkets and warehouse clubs
Hypermarkets and warehouse clubs will have to fight for consumers’ limited budget in the forecast period, which will make the competition between these two channels fiercer, and the winner will be the consumer. Carrefour has bet a great deal on Atacadão to compete directly with second-placed Assaí in warehouse clubs.
