PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Positive outlook for hypermarkets as players look to invest in expansion and infrastructure
The outlook for hypermarkets in Chile over the forecast period is positive, with players expected to strongly invest in the opening of new stores, resuming their path of ambitious expansion that slowed with the effect of social unrest in 2019, the pandemic years, and the unstable economy in 2023. With greater activity by channel players in 2024 and expectations that the forecast period offers stronger growth potential, players have been announcing their investment plans.
Secondary categories and increasing in-store experience key over forecast period
A greater focus by hypermarkets on smaller product categories beyond groceries, such as beauty and personal care, as well as apparel and home products, will ensure that players will remain attractive over the forecast period. Although the general offer significantly improved over the review period, there is still a gap to fill in terms of a more comprehensive experience for consumers, especially in terms of expanding online, and innovating product portfolios.
Arrival of InRetail and expected expansion of discounters can impact hypermarkets
With the announced purchase of discounter chain Erbi by InRetail, part of Peruvian conglomerate InterCorp and owner of the Mass discounter chain in the neighbouring country, hypermarkets in Chile could experience stronger competition over the forecast period. While the Peruvian player has not announced its full plans for the brand, including whether it intends to rebrand Erbi under the Mass banner, it is expected to bring its experience in operating and growing brands from Peru to transform Erbi and quickly scale up the business in Chile.
