Apparel and footwear impacted by challenging economic conditions in 2024
Retail volume sales of apparel and footwear in Australia remain fairly flat in 2024, as the economic downturn and high interest rates impact discretionary spend. As consumers feel the pressure of the high cost of living on their household budgets, subdued spending is impacting many of the industry’s categories.
Market polarisation, DEI and sustainability emerge as key trends in 2024
Polarisation is increasingly evident in Australian apparel and footwear in 2024, with rising concerns about sustainability in fashion at one end of the consumer spectrum – and increased cost-consciousness driving direct-to-consumer ultra-fast fashion sales at the other. Hence, the mid-priced segment is under pressure.
Mergers and disruptive DTC models shape competitive landscape
Premier Investments Ltd (parent company of Just Jeans, Jay Jays, Portmans, Dotti, Jacqui E and Peter Alexander brands) leads apparel and footwear in Australia in 2024; however, this position is unlikely to be retained in the future, given the announcement by Myer Holdings Ltd in late-2024 of its intention to acquire Premier’s apparel brands business. This will impact Just Jeans, Jay Jays, Portmans, Dotti and Jacqui E brands across multiple categories within apparel and footwear.
E-commerce continues to evolve in Australia, responding to consumer demand and shaping trends that echo across the industry
After a robust performance during the pandemic, the growth of apparel and footwear sales through e-commerce has been slowing globally. However, in Australia, e-commerce has been evolving, as apparel and footwear specialists hone their omnichannel offerings, pure-play e-commerce entrants approach the market in new ways, and the parallel importing/grey market channel reinvigorates itself.
What next for apparel and footwear?
Casualisation of local wardrobes is likely to continue in Australia, with sportswear and jeans as standout growth areas in the industry over the forecast period. Replacement necessity is likely to drive demand for childrenswear, but weak value growth (at constant 2024 prices) suggests that a shift towards the mass value segment will continue to characterise the category.
