Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Sales of apparel and footwear show a positive performance in 2024 in Hungary, in both value and volume terms. All categories are seeing positive value growth, with childrenswear showing the strongest value performance.
2024 key trends
The “sneakermania” trend continues, from fashion per se to highly desirable, premium limited editions which are seen as investments as well as status items. Thus, based on the success and community of the “sneaker generation”, in addition to the continued growth of sneakers per se, there is also a new trend for limited edition "drop" sales of hoodies, jumpers, and tracksuits.
Competitive landscape
Apparel and footwear is a fragmented category in Hungary, with H&M Hennes & Mauritz Kft as the leading company in value terms, along with the company’s namesake H&M brand being the best-selling brand.
Retailing developments
Due to increased rent fees, electricity costs, general inflation, and a strengthened price war, retailers are closely monitoring the performance of categories, brands, and sub-brands. This enables them to optimise their portfolios and concentrate on the brands and products which see the strongest and most beneficial sales.
What next for apparel and footwear?
Polarisation between affordable and high-end apparel and footwear is set to continue over the forecast period. Ongoing price-sensitivity will drive consumers to seek discounts and cost-saving deals, alongside supporting affordable brands, while emotionally driven purchases and a desire to own “must-have” products will support sales of high-end products.
