Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
The Indonesian market for apparel and footwear is expected to register a solid performance in current value terms in 2024. While cost-of-living concerns have moderated growth to some extent, several key factors are contributing to its expansion.
2024 key trends
Indonesia continues to attract an increasing number of international premium and mid-range apparel and footwear brands, which are targeting affluent consumers, millennials and Gen Zs. These brands are not only expanding their physical presence but also forming strategic partnerships to reach a broader audience.
Competitive landscape
International brands like Alo, Carhartt, and Sandro have significantly expanded their presence in Indonesia, capitalising on the growing demand from younger, affluent consumers. One notable trend is the rise in premium children's fashion, with global brands like Boss, Kenzo, and Givenchy leveraging their high-end kids' collections in upscale malls, tapping into a more affluent demographic.
Retailing developments
Indonesia has seen a surge in the development of premium malls, attracting both international and local luxury brands. Recent store openings by globally recognised names such as Alo, Carhartt, Le Labo, and Sandro in high-end shopping centres like Plaza Indonesia and Plaza Senayan underscore the continuing demand for physical retail spaces.
What next for apparel and footwear?
The apparel and footwear market in Indonesia is poised for robust retail value growth (at constant 2024 prices) over the forecast period, driven by increased consumer spending, a young and fashion-forward population, and a growing base of affluent consumers. As the number of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWIs) and Ultra High Net Worth Individuals (UHNWIs) continues to rise, government initiatives aimed at expanding the middle class are also expected to fuel greater consumption across both premium and mass-market fashion items.
