Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Sales of apparel and footwear in the United Arab Emirates remain positive in 2024, although growth is gradually slowing following the industry’s robust performance in previous years. Several key macroeconomic factors continue to support growth locally: population growth, record-high tourist arrivals, and a high GDP per capita compared to other global markets.
2024 key trends
Generative AI is set to become an increasingly influential trend, and while many retailers claim they plan to integrate it, it is estimated that fewer than 10% have significantly transformed their business models to leverage its potential. AI holds immense potential, particularly in streamlining the purchase process, whether online or in-store.
Competitive landscape
The United Arab Emirates is a hub for numerous global and regional brands, creating a highly competitive landscape where international names dominate. Yet, a strong movement towards localisation is driving a renewed focus on nurturing homegrown talent.
Retailing developments
E-commerce in the United Arab Emirates is evolving rapidly, with significant growth being driven by the resale market, which is expected to expand quickly in the coming years. For example, luxury e-commerce retailer Farfetch acquired and integrated Luxclusif in 2021, powering its Second Life resale programme.
What next for apparel and footwear?
Apparel and footwear in the United Arab Emirates is expected to sustain its positive momentum, fuelled by solid macroeconomic fundamentals and a booming tourism sector. A key challenge for the luxury segment is how sustainability will shape its future in an industry historically associated with high waste.
