Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Retail volume sales of apparel and footwear in Germany are marginally improving in 2024 after a challenging year in 2023. However, challenges remain, as consumer sentiment is volatile, affected by unpredictable circumstances and global instability.
2024 key trends
In 2024, inflation in Germany continues to create economic uncertainty despite slowing down, leading to persistent financial strain for many households. The cost of living remains a significant concern for German consumers who continue to see their budgets stretched, reducing incentives to make non-essential fashion purchases.
Competitive landscape
Apparel and footwear in Germany is characterised by an increasingly fragmented landscape driven by global players and a growing number of domestic brands. Traditional bricks-and-mortar stores are feeling the pressure as online platforms, particularly e-commerce giants and fast fashion disruptors, continue to gain share.
Retailing developments
Retail e-commerce is regaining growth momentum and share, which is expected to continue over the forecast period. As local consumers become more accustomed to online shopping platforms and see the advantages of e-commerce – such as lower prices or the convenience – the integration with offline retail into a more flexible omnichannel model is supporting the channel’s growth.
