Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
In 2024, the apparel and footwear market in Sweden recorded modest retail value growth, however, retail volume recorded a marginal decline. Retail volume remained challenged by market maturity, and retail value slowed as inflation stabilised and frequent discounting continued to pressure margins.
2024 key trends
The apparel and footwear market in Sweden recorded a steady performance in 2024, despite macroeconomic pressures. Consumers did not trade down to lower-cost products, maintaining their preference for premium alternatives while also embracing second-hand goods.
Competitive landscape
The Swedish apparel and footwear market remained relatively fragmented in 2024, with domestic low-cost giants H&M Hennes & Mauritz Sverige AB, Lindex Sverige AB, and KappAhl Sverige AB (Publ) having the leading retail value shares, with 6%, 5% and 4%, respectively. These brands continued to benefit from their wide distribution networks, affordable nature, and mix of trendier options and classic base items.
Retailing developments
Retail e-commerce continued to hold a strong share in 2024, though share was slightly lower than in 2023. While in-store shopping regained ground, retail e-commerce remained share well above pre-pandemic levels.
