Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
In 2024, apparel and footwear in Canada experienced subdued value and volume growth following a strong recovery in 2023. The prior year's momentum was driven by pent-up consumer demand as public COVID-19 restrictions ended in early 2022, along with a surge in immigration that bolstered household formation and consumption.
2024 key trends
In the course of 2024, apparel and footwear in Canada increasingly polarised as middle-priced brands struggled, with consumers favouring either premium or value-priced offerings. Brands such as Ted Baker, Brooks Brothers, and Lucky Brand exited the Canadian market, unable to justify their pricing amid stiff competition.
Competitive landscape
The competitive landscape for apparel and footwear in Canada during 2024 revealed a mix of successes and challenges for major players, as brands navigated a complex and rapidly evolving market. Lululemon, for instance, sought to diversify its offerings by expanding its footwear line with new running models, aiming to capture a larger share of the performance-oriented market.
Retailing developments
E-commerce maintained its upward trajectory in 2024, driven by the continued popularity of value-oriented platforms like Shein and Temu, which catered effectively to cost-conscious shoppers seeking convenience and affordability. Recognising the importance of integrating online and offline experiences, retailers invested heavily in omnichannel capabilities to meet consumer expectations.
What next for apparel and footwear?
The outlook for apparel and footwear in Canada in the coming years suggests a continuation of modest growth, with market trends gradually stabilising at pre-pandemic levels. Immigration-driven population increases are expected to sustain demand, providing a degree of resilience against broader economic challenges.
