Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Retail sales of apparel and footwear in Spain registered a slowdown in growth in both volume and current value terms in 2024, with the high cost of living being the key factor behind this trend. With many households exposed to rising interest rates, given the high concentration of variable-rate mortgages, Spaniards saw a decline in their disposable incomes and exercised caution when it came to discretionary spending.
2024 key trends
Traditionally, womenswear has been the primary driver of sales in apparel and footwear. While it still accounts for the majority of sales, male consumers are increasingly investing in their appearance and health, fuelling robust performance in menswear and establishing it as a key growth driver in 2024.
Competitive landscape
The competitive landscape in Spain remains dominated by key players, with Inditex's brands, particularly Zara España SA, maintaining key positions. The company has benefited from its value-for-money positioning and a strategy of opening larger, more technologically advanced stores while closing smaller ones in several cities to enhance the customer experience.
Retailing developments
Male consumers are emerging as primary drivers of growth in apparel and footwear. Despite not being as engaged with e-commerce, male specialist retailers are capitalising on this trend, becoming the big winners in brick-and-mortar openings.
What next for apparel and footwear?
Over the forecast period, apparel and footwear in Spain is expected to see relatively stable, modest growth in both volume and current value terms, with the latter outperforming the former, partly as a result of ongoing higher prices.
