Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Sales of apparel and footwear in Italy continued to perform positively in 2024 with an increase both in volume and value terms. Sales were supported by increased price stability in 2024 as inflation dropped after two years of elevated inflation, although at the same time the cost of borrowing remained high with interest rates having been increased to tackle inflation, which meant it was more expensive to buy apparel and footwear on credit.
2024 key trends
Innovation, technological developments and AI are becoming increasingly important and pervasive within apparel and footwear in Italy. These technologies allow for a potentially better and more interactive customer experience, especially though the online channel but also to help provide a more innovative and unique in store experience.
Competitive landscape
The main fast fashion brands remained at the core of apparel and footwear in Italy in 2024. These players continue to hold strong positions thanks to their large product portfolios and value for money positioning.
Retailing developments
Apparel and footwear specialists remained the dominant distribution channel in 2024, followed by retail e-commerce. The latter saw a significant increase in its share as many Italians are now finding it more convenient to shop online, while this dynamic growth is also thanks to the strong impact on sales of social media and influencers.
What next for apparel and footwear?
The future is uncertain for apparel and footwear in Italy with sales projected to stagnate in retail volume terms while declining in value terms (at constant 2024 prices). Although the economy is expected to show some improvement it may take some time before purchasing power recovers and consumer confidence picks up.
