Apparel and footwear in 2024: The big picture
Sales of apparel and footwear in Malaysia are expected to see positive growth in current value terms in 2024, albeit at a slower pace compared to the previous two years. The rising cost of living is a significant factor impacting the market, with higher production costs - driven by increases in raw material prices and labour shortages - leading to higher prices for clothing and shoes.
2024 key trends
As the cost of living rises, Malaysians are becoming increasingly becoming price-sensitive, resulting in a shift towards more affordable apparel and footwear options. To stay competitive in this environment, entry-level luxury brands like Coach, Michael Kors, and Bally are offering discounts of up to 50% on their apparel and footwear lines, targeting the price-conscious middle-income segment.
Competitive landscape
The apparel and footwear market remains highly fragmented, with numerous domestic and international brands competing for market share. Local player Padini Holdings maintains a strong position, bolstered by a diverse range of competitively priced brands such as Brands Outlet, Padini, Vincci, SEED, and Miki Kids.
Retailing developments
The expansion of major shopping malls in Malaysia, such as The Exchange TRX Mall, is driving significant growth in the number of apparel and footwear specialist retailers, with both luxury and non-luxury brands looking to open new stores in these high-traffic locations. Retailers are increasingly investing in physical retail spaces to offer a hybrid shopping experience that combines the convenience of online shopping with personalised service of in-store visits.
What next for apparel and footwear?
The Malaysian market for apparel and footwear will continue to expand in constant value terms (2024 prices) over the forecast period. International retailers are forging ahead with ambitious expansion plans, which will add to an already crowded retail environment.
