Dairy products and alternatives in 2025: The big picture
Retail value sales of dairy products and alternatives are set to rise in current terms in Lebanon in 2025. Despite all the negative trends affecting Lebanon, including economic and financial collapse but also the presidential vacuum and political instability, the packaged food market started to see a recovery in 2022 and into 2023. Some positive trends driven by diaspora remittances, private sector recovery, tourism and hospitality indicators were supporting the recovery. That, however, came to something of a standstill in October 2023 with the onset of the Israel-Hamas war and became worse in the summer of 2024 with heightening tensions followed by the onset of a two-month war in Lebanon on 27 September 2024. A recovery in tourism – mainly from the Lebanese diaspora – was halted by the security situation, hindering a positive trend that was set to help the sector recover over 2024.
Key trends in 2025
The slight recovery in economic activity, redollarisation of the market, and the standardisation of prices in supermarkets in US dollars are allowing consumers to better adapt and to recover their capacity to purchase more often and go back to the brands that they like, which they had avoided at the height of the economic and political crisis.
Competitive Landscape
Lebanon Fruit Juice Co SAL is expected to remain the largest player in dairy products and alternatives in Lebanon in 2025. Market dynamics have not changed significantly during the year, given the high barriers to entry and the still challenging state of the economy. The big Lebanese brands such as Taanayel, Khoury, Farmland and Bonjus still dominate the market and jointly take the lion’s share of the market, although, individually, Nestlé’s Nido remains slightly ahead. All the major Lebanese brands benefit from economies of scale and production capacities that newcomers cannot achieve easily.
Channel developments
Supermarkets is the dominant distribution channel for dairy products and alternatives in Lebanon. These stores benefit from their prevalence and popularity and the efforts invested by brands such as Spinneys, which had been forced to shut some branches during the crisis. The retailer’s consolidation efforts have paid off and it is still present everywhere. In addition, supermarkets such as Carrefour have a good store-based presence and a good online offering, which makes it easier for consumers to shop and to access all brands.
What next for dairy products and alternatives?
Retail value sales of dairy products and alternatives are expected to continue to grow in Lebanon over the forecast period. Should Lebanon continue on a positive path of recovery, dairy should see more positive volume growth over the forecast period. The situation, however, remains very uncertain, with ongoing instability in the region. Many factors could therefore affect the recovery. Nonetheless, the status quo is also providing room for limited positive growth, representing a recovery compared to 2020 and 2021, and it is hoped that the ongoing recovery expected through to 2030 will become a reality.
