Competitive Landscape
La Comer Grows Share as Soriana Loses Ground to Rivals
Supermarkets remains fragmented, with leading chained operators still accounting for less than half of total value sales in 2024 and 2025. Despite efforts by major chains to expand and remodel, a substantial share of value sales continues to be held by independent and small regional supermarket chains, which are deeply rooted in local communities and benefit from strong customer loyalty.
Chedraui’S Supercito Expansion Challenges Entrenched Loyalties and Drives Growth
Grupo Comercial Chedraui’s Supercito banner exemplifies how rapid outlet expansion and a proximity-driven strategy can generate growth, especially in urban and suburban areas where time- and budget-conscious shoppers increasingly prioritise convenience and accessibility. By focusing on neighbourhood locations and competitive pricing, Supercito captures consumers who may otherwise favour discounters or remain loyal to local independents.

Supermarkets
Supermarkets are chained or independent retail outlets with a selling space of between 400 and 2,500 square metres and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Supermarkets may also sell a selection of non-groceries, but the product mix is skewed towards grocery items. Example brands include Casino, Kroger, and Tesco. Exception: In some markets, primarily the US, Australia and Hong Kong, there are grocery retailer brands that operate outlets with a selling space of over 2,500 square metres, but offer only a very limited range of non-grocery merchandise or none at all. These brands are included in Supermarkets.
