PROSPECTS AND OPPORTUNITIES
Supermarket shoppers to face further price hikes
Supermarket shoppers in Israel are set to experience rising prices as the government implements tax hikes to address the growing budget deficit caused by the Israel-Hamas War. While most proposed tax increases are still pending approval, a VAT hike from 17% to 18% has been confirmed, taking effect on 1 January 1 2025.
Questionable future for SPAR
SPAR's expansion in Israel has encountered significant challenges. After opening its first store in Kfar Saba in March 2024, plans to establish additional branches have stalled.
Electra reportedly weighing sale
Industry sources suggest that Electra Consumer Products Ltd is looking to sell 20 of its branches, including the entire Shuk Mehadrin chain. While Electra has not officially confirmed these plans, any divestiture could significantly alter the competitive landscape in the Israeli grocery market over the forecast period.

Supermarkets
Supermarkets are chained or independent retail outlets with a selling space of between 400 and 2,500 square metres and with a primary focus on selling food/beverages/tobacco and other groceries. Supermarkets may also sell a selection of non-groceries, but the product mix is skewed towards grocery items. Example brands include Casino, Kroger, and Tesco. Exception: In some markets, primarily the US, Australia and Hong Kong, there are grocery retailer brands that operate outlets with a selling space of over 2,500 square metres, but offer only a very limited range of non-grocery merchandise or none at all. These brands are included in Supermarkets.
